LUMIO STREAM / ADMINISTRATION
Playback engine settings
Choose encoding preferences and inspect what streams actually use.
Change encoding preferences#
- Open Playback engine as a native administrator.
- Review the current server values before changing them.
- Adjust only the setting required for your media/device, then save the playback settings.
- Start a new stream and inspect player diagnostics. Existing streams need not renegotiate automatically.
| Setting | Verified options / meaning | When and how to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware acceleration | Software — compatibility first; Apple VideoToolbox | Start with a compatible source. Select VideoToolbox for supported Mac acceleration and confirm the actual method in diagnostics/logs. It is a preference, not proof of hardware use. |
| Encoding threads | Automatic or 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 | Limit CPU work when necessary. Automatic is represented by -1. Restore the previous selection if throughput suffers. |
| Transcoding temporary folder | Empty uses the managed cache; Choose temporary folder selects a local writable folder | Use sufficient free space and a stable mounted location. Revert to the previous folder if permission or drive availability fails. |
| Throttle transcoding when it gets ahead of playback | On/off | Limits work ahead of the playhead; it does not improve an unsupported codec. |
The bundled encoder is jellyfin-ffmpeg 7.1.4. The current adaptive profile targets HLS/H.264/AAC with stereo client audio. HDR tone mapping, multichannel passthrough and every codec/device combination are not qualified by enabling a switch.
Diagnose a difficult file#
Use the video player's Restart in compatibility mode, which requests a different stream negotiation. It restarts playback near the current position. Reduce client quality if network bandwidth is the constraint. Use Logs & diagnostics for an actual transcode failure; do not repeatedly clear caches or change source files to guess at a fix.
Lumio has no general UI for arbitrary encoder flags, GPU selection or a certified 4K/HDR performance preset. See video controls and troubleshooting.
