Background tasks & scans

Read progress, start targeted work and cancel intentionally.

Find the right task#

Open Background tasks. Each task has a name, state, reported progress and last execution information when supplied by the engine. Overview also shows library activity without pretending an unknown scanned/remaining count is known.

Run or cancel#

  1. Choose a task relevant to the work: use a library's targeted scan for one changed library.
  2. Select the task's run control when idle.
  3. Monitor its Running state and reported percentage.
  4. Use its Cancel control only if you intend to interrupt that work; wait for cancellation to finish before retrying.

A task's availability/name comes from the bundled engine, so not every server has an identical list. Scanning indexes readable media and enabled metadata. Online metadata jobs can issue network requests. Source folders remain in place.

Progress and recovery#

An indexed count is the current catalog size, not a promise that every source file was read during this run. A failed last execution appears separately from Idle. Check Logs & diagnostics, source access and provider configuration before starting the same task repeatedly.

For realtime folder watching, mounted/network volumes may still need a manual scan. Scanning while a drive is disconnected can produce missing/unavailable items; reconnect and rescan instead of deleting the logical library. Libraries explains scan timing on save.
