Install & update

Install on Apple silicon and safely replace an existing build.

Requirements#

The packaged server is for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. Windows and Intel builds are not qualified. Other devices may use the browser Media Center over a configured HTTPS endpoint; they do not run this Mac installer.

You need readable local folders or mounted drives and enough writable space for the profile, metadata, cache and any transcoding work. No fixed library-capacity or performance guarantee is made.

Install for the first time#

Download the macOS DMG from the landing page or official releases.
Review its release notes and compare its SHA-256 with the release checksum file.
Open the DMG and drag Lumio Stream into Applications.
Open the installed app. Complete the per-user background-service setup when offered.
Continue to first-run setup.

The installer is an unsigned, non-notarized development preview. Do not bypass an unexpected security warning or install an untrusted replacement. Signing and clean-machine qualification are not claimed.

Update without starting over#

In Administration, use Backup & maintenance → Create database backup before an important update. A backup briefly stops the engine.
Stop the background server/tray using its explicit quit action, then quit Administration. Closing only the window leaves the server running.
Replace the app in Applications with the newer verified build.
Reopen Lumio. The existing profile lives outside the app; keep the existing media paths mounted.
Confirm the version in Application → Version & updates and server status in Overview.

The Mac app has no enabled automatic binary updater. The Media Center PWA separately offers an app-shell update; accepting it reloads the web app and stops current playback. Application preferences explain the distinction.

Recovery#

Keep the previous app and a consistent profile backup. If startup fails, preserve the current profile before restoring a compatible backup; do not copy a live database or replace individual database files while its engine runs.
